Coup d'Espace

Coup
d'Espace

Coup d’Espace is the latest bespoke creative series by Stefanie Batten Bland. A French phrase that translates to 'stroke of space,' it is the title of large-scale, immersive works that have been awarded 2025 NYSCA , 2026 Connecticut College Research & Developement and 2023 Creative Capital funding. The work examines the ways individuals and communities generate creative expression and connection in transformed environments.

These immersive experiences aim to foster community building by engaging participants and presenters in selecting and highlighting landmarked homes and buildings that have embodied or continue to embody rich identity. This approach invites the audience to see their role as vital in shaping shared cultural spaces, making them feel appreciated and motivated to contribute to deeper community connections.

Each so is created and is unique to the presenting space and place.

Make Granny Great Again (MGGA): A Coup d’Espace Experience is the latest work by Stefanie Batten Bland. It places resistance and performance in plain sight. In honor of the great pioneer Ellen Stewart, founder, artistic director, and producer of La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, SBB believes in artists' capacity to take creative risks within a space, asserting that work itself is a form of resistance. This new project draws on our ancestors' guidance to safeguard discourse and challenge cultural erasure in shared spaces.

This work directly confronts society’s erasure of post-menopausal women and the rich legacy they weave together through shared stories and experiences—if we are open to sitting and listening. This specific generation, which fought for and secured more federal rights regarding their bodies and medical access than their own granddaughters, navigated a patriarchal space where they had to fit in. How does the seat of rebellion exist overtly in the world? In plain sight.

THE PARTY: A Coup d’Espace Experience - is an immersive performance that centers Julius Caesar hosting a party for Cicera, prompting cultural reflection on themes of power, resistance, and individuality. As a resistance and a performance in plain sight, the Party manifests, in real time, the infectious nature of propaganda spreading through culture. This invites the audience to feel the significance of their role in social influence and consider their own responses to propaganda.
